On TV

by Lemmonex on May 8, 2011

So, I do this thing where I put off certain decisions. Or maybe I just fail at being an adult when it comes to certain things.

Take, for instance, the decor in my apartment. And when I say decor, I mean the non existant decor. I have several things hung on the wall, but that is about it. It looks insane asylumiesque, largely because I don’t plan on living here for more than another year or so and then I am out. I oddly love this tiny shoebox I call home, but I know long term it isn’t going to work.

So, as a result, I have kind of just put everything on hold. I have a bed and a book shelf and a cart type thingy, but that is about it. If you come over to my house, you sit on my bed with me as we drink wine. If you are lucky, you get to play footsy with me.

And my TV? Well, I think this says it all:

I am not kidding you. This is my TV. Even with my glasses on, I can barely read the subtitles.

And I make excuses because I don’t actually watch that much TV besides my weekly date with Ron Swanson. Most of my TV comes from Netflix instant. I am a huge fan of catching up on shows years after the fact. (Hey, The Wire! How ya doing, Sons of Anarchy?) This means doing it up college style in bed with my lap top.

Of course this brings a lot of mockery in to my life. My friend Irish damn near demanded it is time for a new TV and I can’t quite argue with her. It has become a go to joke with another friend. My mother even enjoys mocking it, saying I would probably watch more television if I had a better TV. This seems an interesting argument from a parent, but far be it from me to write and read books. I need more Housewives in my life, it seems.

And while I guess it is time to grow, to become an adult and welcome a flat screen in my life, I can’t still help but argue that maybe I don’t need it. That I am adorable when I squint and that this relic of a TV ahs it charms.

But then I realize I sound like a hipster and there is nothing quite worse than that. To Best Buy this weekend I go.

If I may make a suggestion? Instead of purchasing a large TV, you may want to think about purchasing the IMAC 27″. You can get a refurbished one for 1799. The advantages are that you can use the wireless keyboard and track pad for your surfing and then it is a simple matter of the DVI input connector on the back to get regular TV. 27″ in your room will be big enough for you to see the detail. It’s what I do in my studio for clients to see and I have had no complaints.

My television is from 1989. I kid you not. It was my grandmother’s. The thing weighs about 60 pounds, and most remote controls don’t work on it, but it works just fine. And although it really is ridiculously big and clunky and outdated, I can’t bear the thought of ditching it.

Meaning, I’ll live vicariously through you and your Best Buy run.

My fabulous Gay neighbor is moving and selling off the fabulous contents of his fabulously decorated apartment this weekend…at fabulously cheap prices. I’ve had him put a bar cart and a mirror on layaway for me, but he has some great stuff that you could have for a song. Let me know if you are interested.

Also, I trust you’ve seen this: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/02/cats_who_look_like_ron_swanson.html

Ron Swanson is my boyfriend.

For the sake of your eyes, I recommend getting an HDTV. That being said, I think the sheer beauty of the flat panel HDTV is the fact that it can be hung on a wall, which, living in a city, can really be a bonus as it frees up space. Now, if you get a blu-ray player to go along with your new TV, you can stream Netflix, Pandora, etc.

Sometimes the expensive stuff is expensive because it is versatile, and oh so worth it.

If you haven’t purchased anything yet, I would look at what Costco has to offer. Their prices are good, return policy even better, and they add an extra year on to the warranty.

Our TV is giant, from Value Village (do these exist in the States? It’s pretty much a slightly less-depressing version of Goodwill) and its “antenna” is an empty can of Crush diet cream soda dangling from a piece of broken wire. On a good day, we get two clear-ish channels and three fuzzy ones.

But, like you, I am always anticipating the next move, so I never want to commit to furniture, so long as I can avoid it. This explains my futon/couch/guest bed, which could very well be stuffed with hay and yet I refuse to upgrade from.

If it makes you feel better, my tv used to be a wood-paneled monstrosity with a pull-knob and no remote control and it only went up to channel 36. I inherited it from my college boyfriend’s parents, and the only reason that I have a different one now is because (about 4 years ago) my aunt and uncle got a nice new flat screen and handed down their old one to me. The ‘new’ one is still big and bulky and full of tubes but I don’t care.

When I still had my Woody (which was an odd point of pride for me), one of my friends joked that she was going to get me a remote control for Christmas. And by remote control she meant a bunch of dowels that she had glued together so that I could change the channel from the couch.
Man, I kind of loved that tv.

You don’t need it. Trust me. It will all be on the internet in a few years. I’m going with that.

This ALMOST makes me want to buy you a new TV.

Almost.

My home-entertainment center: http://twitpic.com/4wv2f1

My parents’ old 19″ Panasonic from 1990, and it’s sitting on top of the bright-blue plastic foot locker that my grandparents bought me when I was in elementary school.

I think I’ve got you beat.
