The Past Few Days

by Lemmonex on December 15, 2010

…have been trying.

My computer is indeed fried. The hard drive has shuffled off this mortal coil after years of devotion and dedication to me. I was very glad to have had a two margarita lunch before getting that news at the Apple store.

Monday night, I got home to an ice cold apartment. (This was after a date where I didn’t really eat dinner, drank too much Prosecco, and was feeling like I was not the best me I could be.) I barely slept, shaking and shivering my way through the night. I could see my breath in my apartment when I awoke. The wind chill in DC has been 8 degrees.

I frosted out the best I could and headed in to work. Before making it in to the office, though, I was sure to completely wipe out on a patch of black ice. I like to gild the lily like that.

As a result of a trifecta of craptastic events, I came in to the office and basically lost my shit. My wonderful coworker was comforting me when my boss walked in. He was great about it (this is pretty unlike me), but I was mortified.

I trudged home last night, pretty positive that things couldn’t get worse. When I walked in to my apartment and the heat seemed to be back on, I was encouraged.

And then it went out again at 10 pm. I. Lost. My. Mind. Really, Universe? Can a sister get a break?

But here is where I do my best to be thankful. My wonderful friends Anna and Nicole brought me space heaters at 11.30 pm. That is far and above the call of duty. This was after half a dozen people offered me their couches to sleep on.

And a great fellow who I met through this here blog has offered to install a hard drive for me. He has saved me hundreds of dollars and alleviated a boatload of anxiety.

Yes, it has sucked. Yes, if you follow me on twitter, you can argue I have been a bit of a gloomier Gus. Yes, it could always, always be worse and having good people in your life makes this abundantly clear.

Wow, that is enough optimism for today. Time to go ream out my leasing company and demand rent reduction for this month.

You complain as much as you want. That is some massive craptasticness right there. But I am very glad you have such awesome and lovely friends.

Your leasing company BETTER deduct from your rent and fix that damn heat already which I really hope they do ASAP.

I’m sorry but I find it really hard to feel sorry for any woman on a day that Ryan Reynolds is single again. If anyone deserves sympathy it is all single bachelors out there. I bet cat sales went through the roof yesterday as men everywhere just gave up.

You are walking proof this week of both the theory that it never rains but that it pours and the fact that you can get through even the worst shit with the right support. The good news is, it’s half over. Right?

Ugh, sorry to hear about Murphy’s Law coming into effect with a vengeance in your life; and there’s no doubt that blistering cold makes everything a million times worse. I live in Toronto. Trust, I feel your pain.

Thank goodness for awesome friends… and space heaters. Ya gotta love those, too.

Well. YOu are not alone. There are three fairly stoic people in my life who would rather jump off a bridge than let you see them cry, who totally lost their shit in the past week. I was like, “OMG! Who is going down next?!” And I’m sorry it was you. December and the holidays suck anyway. Maybe this is the ugly build up.

Awesome friends make everything better. Good luck with bitching out your leasing company; they tend to be assholes about stuff like this.

I’m sorry that your week has been so craptastic, but it sounds like with the help of friends it is looking up! Now go get that rent reduction- you are legally entitled to working heat in the winter time!!

Lexa, First time caller long time listener. Love your blog. Let me tell you though that DC is VERY friendly when it comes to Residents in Washington DC vs Landlords.

I have attached a link here but due to your fried MAC (and if your friend cannot install the hard-drive, I can do it and have the OS up and running for the price of a Starbucks Venti Caramel Brulee) I will cover the pertinent points in the hope that you can read it on your phone.

http://www.dc.gov/DC/DCRA/Inspections/Housing+Code+Inspections/District+Heating+Regulations

Heating must be on between 68 degrees between 6:30 am and 11 pm and 65 degrees between 11 pm and 6:30 am between October 15 and May 15.

Landlords MUST submit a inspection report to the DCRA every year indicating the inspection done.

If your problem is not solved to your satisfaction after contacting your landlord, contact 202-442-9557 to have DC inspect the premises where landlords can be subject up to 1000 dollars in fines and other penalties.

DC specifically says “If the owner of a rental unit provides air conditioning, either through individual units or through a central system, the system must be capable of keeping the interior of the units equal to the greater of 78 degrees or at least 15 degrees cooler than the outside temperature.”

So there you go. Good luck and maybe hit the bar and find another way to stay warm ;)

Oh and if you live in Virginia, you are SOL but Maryland has the same thing and you can contact me for that information if you wish.

Yes, that is super terrible. And I hope you know that you can always come over. We typically have a bed available.

Because this week has sucked so bad, I predict next week will be extra great to make up for it.

Computer problems are bad enough, but no heat during this abnormally cold December is horrible! I’m glad that Pedro pointed you to DCRA’s regulations on heating, and I hope that your leasing company warms up your pockets more than it did your apartment.

And, my sofa bed is always your sofa bed!
