On Random Acts and Big Mysteries

My life is, at this point, fairly routine. Sure, random dates (and the inevitable stories that follow) and increasingly infrequent hangovers shake things up, but there is a relative calm in my life most days.

Well, today proved that even I can snap out of a routine.

My mail was dropped in my inbox today around 5 pm and I started mindlessly shuffling through everything. A catalog for my boss, an impersonal and mass produced holiday card, a post card reminder for an upcoming conference. When I saw a letter addressed to me, I almost threw it out. Most times, things sent to me are sales pitches (nope, we don’t need a new toner company, but thanks!) and this letter didn’t even have a return address. But something stood out: the address indicated my floor in the building. This is somewhat rare. I felt compelled to open it.

This is what I found:

$100. In the mail. To my work.

Yes, it is real, cash money.

Yes, my boss immediately instructed me to wash my hands.

Yes, I googled the name of the company/foundation. It does not exist.

Yes, I have asked half my social circle if they sent it.

Yes, I am somewhat convinced it is laced with anthrax (so far so good, Mom.)

Yes, I know Tom Riddle is Voldemort.

It has been a delightful, if surprising, occurrence. Life can still really catch you off guard, sometimes in the best of ways. If you did send this to me, please show yourself. Let me thank you. What a lovely thing this has been. I am not sure what I did to deserve it, but life has been a little rough lately. It feels like a little high five from the Universe.

Also, if I don’t get another envelope in the mail tomorrow, screw everything. This is gonna happen for the rest of my life, right?
