On Sheen

by Lemmonex on November 22, 2010

I have an insatiable hunger for celebrity gossip. Now, I do have my lines. I think paparazzi who chase after children are special kinds of assholes and crossing property lines is pretty abhorrent, but I do think that when a celeb dines at Spago, they have no right to get pissed when their picture is snapped. If a celeb has made a career about being a “good guy”, I don’t feel too bad when he is found with his pants around his ankles. I know lots of people like to act above it and feel a sense of pride when they don’t know who a certain celeb is, but myself? I love it.

I have been watching this whole Charlie Sheen debacle with rapt attention. Let me clarify; the most recent Charlie Sheen debacle, where it appears he went on a rampant coke binge, choked a porn star, threw a lamp at said porn star and scared her so much that she locked herself in the bathroom.

Today, Sheen’s publicist released the following statement in an attempt to publicly shame the woman involved in the most recent arrest:

This is a woman who, for the right amount of money, sleeps with strangers.

This woman, Capri Anderson, has denied that she is a prostitute. It is, though, not up for debate that she is a porn star. Let’s, for a minute, believe that she is a prostitute, that Charlie Sheen paid her money for sex. He paid her money for sex. I don’t quite understand why it is worse for this woman to take money for sex than it is for Mr. Sheen to pay for sex, over and over and over again.

Ah, the whole virgin whore complex. Right.

Prostitution should be legal. It is going to take place whether it is against the law or not, so why not regulate it? Of course this will never happen in our buttoned up, puritanical society. It would take unfathomable work to get over centuries of sexism and openly examine how we view sex. More to the heart of the matter, tax payer money would have to go towards STD testing, government regulated hotels, and prosecuting Johns/Janes that mistreat their employees. As Americans, we would much rather use our money towards a futile battle against drugs and fighting wars we can never win. Hell will freeze over in the United States before women are allowed to have agency over their own bodies, especially if it means using them for money.

As I have watched this unfold, I have become angered, but not surprised, at some of the commentary. “Like choking never happens in porn” and “porn is the same as prostitution” has both been bandied about. Yes, choking happens in porn. Yes, some women like to be choked or like to do the choking. I fail to see how this is relavent. Sexual practices and personal kinks cannot be regulated nor should they be suppressed if they are done amongst consenting adults. Women with rape fantasies do not deserve to be raped, women who enjoy being choked should not be beaten and all women should be able to express themselves sexually without fear of bodily harm outside the bedroom. Fantasies are just that; we should not be punished for them.

Porn is a complex issue; women are often humiliated, but some of us get off on that. There is violence and things that many of us don’t understand, but I would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t watched it. Things get really complicated when you try to regulate sexual desire and attempt to draw a line on what is and is not degrading. What is offensive and base to one person is Tuesday night to another.

But this is what I know: a woman was beaten, threatened and terrified and she has become the butt of endless jokes. I think we can all agree that Charlie Sheen isn’t a great guy. He has three daughters and as many ex wives, yet he never seems to reflect on how his behavior affects the women in his life and what he is telling them when he acts in such a way. He has been in and out of rehab without ever really attempting to recover, beaten former wives, and has been arrested more times than I have fingers. Yet, we reward him with an obscene salary and allow him to shame a woman for taking the money he offered for sex. I am not saying Capri Anderson is a saint; any person who goes home with Charlie Sheen is at the very best lacking in judgment. It just makes me sick that beating a woman is tolerated, laughing at her plight is common place, and rewarding the man involved for his continual bad behavior is never questioned.

We can do better than this.

I would offer a comment, but you pretty much said everything I would say (and better). Cosign all the way.

I hadn’t heard a lot of this but that statement makes me sick. Guess what, Charlie Sheen? Fuck. You. I hate that that’s considered an acceptable rebuttal to his behavior.

Lexa,

I have some thoughts. I’ll only share them over a glass of wine, though.

I agree with all of it and all I have to say is that you’re an amazing writer. You better be published one day.

Interesting… I live in a country where prostitution (some types) is legal, and I’ve also lived in a country where all prostitution is legal. (By some types, I mean brothels are legal, street prostitution is not -but it still happens -just like anywhere). Somehow we haven’t devolved into some sex-crazed, non-functioning society. Nor is prostitution in your face daily. In fact, I bet tourists who didn’t know better wouldn’t even notice the brothels. Prostitution is the oldest career in the world and should be legal and regulated.

I’m not even going to get started on Charlie Sheen. The boy loves 2 and a Half Men. I can’t even stand to watch commercials of it any more.

I hadn’t heard of this, either (where have I been?) but based on your post about it, I’m appalled… & have just looked up about 10 other stories on it. It’s a sad, revolting reflection on our society’s insatiable appetite for all things sex & sexual, & all things violence related - but to shame only one when the two combine.

Ok I’m am not in any way defending beating women. But was this woman really beaten? From what I’ve read she hasn’t even filed a report against him and he’s actually suing her for extortion. Charlie Sheen is an asshole and I am not defending him, but also he is a great target for these kind of allegations. His past proves that, which is completely his own fault.

I hope I’m not coming across like I think this incident was insignificant or that this women wasn’t genuinely frightened. But, really I think it is a classic he said/she said case and this women is more focused now on getting her 15 minutes or fame and money. I mean she even said “There was a little bit of romance, if you will” about that night.

Anyway, I hope you get what my point is and not think I sound like an asshole.

…and all the while his character on Two and a Half Men glorifies every bit of his behavior. I think people are actually beginning to project what they see on the show to his very real and very disturbing actions.

You know, I don’t even care what she does for a living. Sheen has a history of abusing woman a mile long. He needs to be in jail for a long time. He needs to be fired from his job for his abuse of women and drugs. Hollywood needs to take a stand saying that this behavior is unacceptable.

End Rant.

I don’t agree, actually….not entirely at least. Mostly because I look at prostitution from the angle of human trafficking and sex slavery. Legalizing prostitution will only exacerbate the problem, since it will create a legal demand for sex. Amsterdam is a perfect example. Now that prostitution is legal, the demand for has increased, many of them are slaves, and coerced/kidnapped children.

Keep prostitution as an illegal activity, and severely punish the Johns for buying sex. Punish those that create the demand, and the problem will decrease.

I actually had not heard about this story. This is endemic in society today here in the US and in other places. And it stretches beyond Hollywood into for example sports as well where popular public figures are not properly punished for their harmful and illegal actions. It’s just NOT ok. At all.

I don’t know that I can really say that I think it’s as simple as “prostitution should be legal.” Just because it’s a more complicated issue than that, in my opinion. Forced prostitution is always a problem in the “prostitution should be legal” argument. Women and children are being bought and sold for sex without their consent all over the world. And that’s a problem.

Do I think that two consenting adults should be charged with a crime just because money was exchanged for sex? Hell no. It’s called a date.

Charlie Sheen is…awful. You have to wonder how Martin Sheen must feel about all of this. And I completely agree about the whole rewarding him for his behavior by paying him an obscene salary thing. Hi, I’m looking at you, professional athletes who commit heinous crimes and then go back to work getting paid millions of dollars as though nothing happened.

We really and truly should be able to do better. Glad you wrote about this.

I don’t care if there’s a question over whether or not the girl was actually beaten, I think Sheen’s history speaks for itself on that one. If multiple women have said independently of the others that he abused them, then in all likelihood he fucking beat them & it’s clear that he refuses to get treatment for the things that fuel his bad behavior. As you said, the worst part of the whole thing is the fact that this man who mistreats women has daughters. It’s disgusting.
