Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?

Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?

by Lemmonex on October 28, 2009

So, male bloggers.

Let’s talk about them.

I need more in my life. I mean, JP and Peter and fB and Narm and Matt are lovely. I read them on the daily.

And then there are Jason Mulgrew and Matt Logelin. The big hitters, famous for blogging which is one part awesome and one part ridiculous, but 100% enviable. I have a harmless internet crush on Jason Mulgrew and when I say harmless I mean I sometimes think about stroking his beard…and staring in to his eyes…perhaps even holding his hand.

Where was I?

But where are the guys? Unscientific polling on my part tells me that the blogsophere is about 80% female. It makes sense as us girls have a lot of stuff to talk about and boy, do we love to talk. But guys surely have stuff to say, no? I mean I have to believe they do. If nothing else, it is a pretty sweet way to meet some ladies. One of the men above (ok, maybe more than one) constantly discusses my boobs with me; do you think this would fly at a bar or coffee shop? I think not.

But I dunno, I just need a little male loving in my life. Come out, guys. I want to hear what you have to say.

I have all the boys in my lair. I don’t allow them to blog. or do anything expressive. It’s just better that way.

Your Boob’s= Awesomeness

FB and I discussed this very thing 2 weeks ago… the odd’s are clearly in our favor.

Male non-sense and writing style is very different from female’s. It is all perspective. When was the last time a female blogger referenced Sleeping Beauty and Cobra Commander in the same paragraph?

We love the ladies and hopefully, the ladies love us!

PQ October 28, 2009 at 7:02 am

Seriously. I love my ladies and all but we need more testosterone in our world.

Word-wise.

I was curious about this, so I did a sex-check on my blogroll. Of the ones where I know the writer’s gender, I came up with 20 women and 17 men. Of the bloggers I’ve discovered via DCBlogs/blogger events, a clearer majority were female.

Theory: The total blogverse is probably about 60% female, but the most socially active bloggers, who hang out in groups with other bloggers, are female. This creates the illusion of a female super-majority.

What do you think?

Marie October 28, 2009 at 7:14 am

I think your boobs are fantastic. But I’m a girl so I guess that doesn’t count.

But you are so right, there seems to me more female than male bloggers which is not so cool. More men bloggers needed thankyouverymuch.

wow, what an oppurtunity… Yep i’m a guy, yup i have a head full of thoughts and crap that would probably be semi entertaining, but to be honest when i look at how good lemmonex and LiLu are.. my literary ’skills’ could never live up to your standards (not that that should be an issue)

I can wear a beard for you, if you like.

i don’t think boys like to talk. they have thoughts, but i don’t think they’re too big on the sharing part, unless it leds to something else…like being famous in the blogosphere.

[Reply]

Narm October 28, 2009 at 7:27 am

Man was I hoping that I was the one that talked about your boobs all the time. Foiled again!

[Reply]

GingerMandy October 28, 2009 at 7:29 am

i’d like a little more testosterone in these blogging parts too… although having a bunch of ladies around is pretty awesome.

and i’ll tell you your boobs are awesome all day long, missy. as long as you pet me.

i agree with this post wholeheartedly.

there aren’t enough male bloggers and males are very important to me – i wanna hear what they have to say!

as for jason mulgrew and matt logelin – you KNOW where i stand on these hot bearded men. jason in his i wanna go out and party and watch sports with him way and matt in the let’s listen to wilco and talk about feelings way.

i’m not only the fan club president but i’m also a client.

that made no sense. fuck.

If you don’t have enough men in your blog world that may mean you need to add explosions and beer to your blog posts!

I’ve found a few male bloggers that I adore. My husband started blogging this year, so I read his blogs. He is a man (I know this from personal experience) and he likes to share what he’s thinking. I read Pham’s blog, Sebastian’s blog, How Rude Are you?, Ben’s blog, Worst Damn Blog, Wil Wheaton’s blog (*swoon*), and Badass Geek’s blog. And Organic Meatbag’s blog. And Dmbosstone’s blog. They are all dudes. :] I think there are more, too… but I can not think of them off the top of my head.

Funny you should mention. I’ve had a little corner of the ’sphere for, oh, a couple-three years now, but in August I just totally dried up. Not in topics, but in mental drive to actually elucidate. Just as I returned to bloggable pursuits, was thinking of dividing my stuff into 3 blogs (2 topical, 1 catch-all) and got an invitation to blog with some guys whom I consider way out of my intellect and writing league, my energy got soaked into real-world pursuits. Pity, since I might actually have something interesting to say for a change.

Am I also totally intimidated by the really good bloggers? Only kinda. I have no illusions of Great Online Literature or adoring fans. My blog began specifically to spew thoughts into the aether, get them off my chest where almost no one would see them. Still, there are people whose blogs I read and think, “Why do I bother? What the holy hell do I add?” Then I realize it doesn’t matter, and write something anyway.

[Reply]

Herb October 28, 2009 at 9:16 am

I think guys give up on blogging because there are only so many posts you can write about nicknames for your trouser snake.

[Reply]

Jenn October 28, 2009 at 9:17 am

Don’t let LiLu wear a beard. Please.

And when you find those male bloggers, pass them along (as long as they don’t write about sports. Then I’m out.)

[Reply]

SB October 28, 2009 at 9:52 am

A little stat to help you through: According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, among Internet users, 14 percent of men and 11 percent of women blog.

It is always a delight to find a male blogger that I really like, but you are so right – they’re very few and far between.

Also, I’m yet another not-guy who thinks your boobs are awesome.

I blog for an entertainment site, so you’re not gonna get much in the way of personal/slice of life stuff from me. The occasional music/movie/television review, or my thoughts on ladies I’d like to eventually go through divorce proceedings with!

After reading your post I did a little checking on my google reader…probably 90% were female. What’s up with that? I will say though that David at http://diamondkt.blogspot.com/ totally wins the award for favorite male blogger in my book. If you’ve never read his stuff, you should totally check it out.

[Reply]

Gilahi October 28, 2009 at 12:02 pm

It’s for the same reason that women are always asking men, “What are you thinking about?” What they really don’t seem to understand is that the honest, real, no-BS answer is “nothing”. We rarely have anything in our brains at all, much less anything worth talking/writing about. This is why women have 30-minute stories about the shoes they didn’t buy, but when a guy buys shirts, pants, socks and underwear and a woman asks him what he got, he says, “clothes”.

Rachel October 28, 2009 at 12:09 pm

I love my boy bloggers out there, but seriously, if I have to read one more post about fantasy sports, I will un-follow all of them.

Also, my desire for more male bloggers is directly related to the fact that I would like to find a nice, straight, single man. Most of my favorite male bloggers are already taken. Or are gay. Or do not know I exist. Ya know, important details.

[Reply]

Peregrine John Reply:

Yeah, I don’t much get the attraction to investing emotion, time and money into a game that neither I nor anyone I personally know is playing. Weird, but a line toward “Revenge of the Nerds” covers it. Of all the couple-three dozen blogs I take daily, only 1 mentions sports very often, and a fair portion of that blog’s sports items are metaphorical. Games are for playing, not watching. Says I. Thus, the observer kind rarely (maybe never) rates a mention in my own.

Unless, of course, by “fantasy sports” you mean something totally different than I thought you meant. In which case, I’m in.

[Reply]

Peregrine John Reply:

Umm, “but a line toward” should be “but a line toward the end of…” Yeesh.

Long-time listener, first time caller, er, commenter, but I felt like I needed to respond as a male blogger. I think many of the male blogs/bloggers out there focus on sports. While I would classify myself in that category, I do participate in TMI Thursday, so does that count for anything?

Cowboys don’t blog much, and we sure as hell don’t use twitter. We prefer the sky to the internet, and instead of discussing issues at length we simply handle their business and move on. We’re not the guy writing an update about our burned-out tailight, we’re the guy standing in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot at 9:00 at night with a replacement bulb, a flashlight and a screwdriver.

Still, despite our fondness for laconic speech and horrifically unstylish jeans, I like to think we do a decent job of holding the door open and telling you that you’re purty when our paths cross in real life.

And scene.

Hammer October 28, 2009 at 1:57 pm

Our personal pronoun use can get a little shaky sometimes too. I blame the BBQ.

Also read Jay over at Genius Pending? He has a beard. He’d probably even let you stroke it.

And try Phronk. I love his stuff. He’s smart as hell and funny. But alas, he is beardless.

And Johnny Virgil. Because I said so. He’s my blog hero and the very reason I wanted to start my own blog.

Also, boys are freakin’ quitters. They’re always quitting and coming back (I’m looking at you, Matt). Or just quitting. Whatever, boys. Stop being quitters.

Yeah, I’d say 80% is about right. Most guys just have a hard time saying what’s on their mind, especially if it reveals any personal weakness, heaven forbid. There are some (like the one I live with) who think Blogging is a total waste of time. He won’t admit it, but why else did he quit???

[Reply]

Phronk October 28, 2009 at 9:13 pm

Shine is too kind.

You’d think hanging in this female-dominated blogging world would be a sweet way to meet ladies. However, I think you actually identified why guys don’t blog: it’s not.

“You should read my blog” is sort of the opposite of a pickup line.

[Reply]

JP Ryan October 29, 2009 at 10:18 am

Most guys don’t like to talk much… when I blog it’s more of a stream of conciousness/venting thing. I try not to hold back so sometimes it can be a bit shocking but most of the time is rather mundane…

I did recently make my blog private because I say some not so pleasant things about my co-workers and didn’t want them stumbling upon it…

I have a couple of blogs. One is in my name with my picture, etc. I share thoughts around a number of topics. The other one, which is more interesting to most people is a mental/physical health blog that I run called Emotions for Engineers. Aimed at people with an “engineering” mindset to try to help them understand those parts of the world about which they are so clueless.
